The story of Chhava is based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, who was the second ruler of the Maratha Empire. The film begins with the news of Shivaji Maharaj’s death, upon hearing which Mughal emperor Aurangzeb orders celebrations, assuming that the Maratha Empire will now come to an end. But on the contrary, Sambhaji Maharaj takes over the power and gives a befitting reply to the Mughals with his bravery.
Sambhaji Maharaj wages a war against the Mughals, displaying his courage and strategic skills. He attacks Burhanpur and seizes the Mughal treasury, making Aurangzeb realise that the Marathas still have power. Meanwhile, intrigues begin in the Maratha court, where some courtiers plot to put his half-brother Rajaram on the throne. Aurangzeb attacks the Marathas with a huge Mughal army, but Sambhaji Maharaj uses guerrilla warfare tactics and causes heavy damage to the Mughals. Meanwhile, due to the treachery of some treacherous chieftains, Sambhaji Maharaj is captured by the Mughals. Aurangzeb gives him an opportunity to surrender, but he does not compromise on his Maratha identity and principles of Swaraj. As a result, he is brutally tortured and eventually killed.
The film ends with the message that Sambhaji Maharaj’s sacrifice did not go in vain. A few decades after his death, the Maratha Empire emerged even more powerful and the Mughals collapsed, laying the foundation of Swaraj in India.
