Gandhi Tatha Chettu Story
Gandhi Tatha Chettu At the beginning of the film, Ramachandraiah (Anand Chakrapani) tells his granddaughter Gandhi (Sukriti Veni Bandreddy), “It takes time to win with love.” The dialogue comes when Gandhi asks something she heard from her friends—did India get independence late because of Mahatma Gandhi’s non-violent struggle? On the occasion of 76th Republic Day, this film tries to revive the fading Gandhian ideology.
The story of the film begins in a village in Telangana, where the mobile and internet had not reached in the 2000s. Here a huge neem tree (voiced by Tanikella Bharani) introduces the village. The story revolves around a teenage Gandhi and her friends, but it also raises issues such as deteriorating agriculture, migration, education, environment and gender equality.
The village sugar factory is closing down, leaving the farmers in financial distress and ready to sell their land to a chemical factory. But Gandhi’s grandfather Ramachandraiah is adamant about saving his neem tree and land. Gandhi struggles to save this tree following the Gandhian ideals of her grandfather.
The first half of the film moves along as expected, but the second half brings some interesting twists. When Gandhi is frustrated with the methods of her movement, her friends suggest a new path, which brings hope to the village.
