Kingston Story
Every Friday a new Tamil film comes out, and each time a new film ruins its chances. “Kingston” is another horror film that loses its sheen due to commercial pressures. The loud background score doesn’t let the film sink into the story. Like “Sorgvasal” (2024), this film too tries to tell its complex story in a hurry, which neither builds suspense nor makes proper use of the scenery.
However, this film is not made to promote any star hero. A sea-based horror adventure has never been seen before in Tamil cinema. Debut director Kamal Prakash has made this film grandly, but still the story crumbles under its own weight.
The story spans three generations. Since the death of Stephen Bose (Azhagam Perumal) in 1982, fishermen who venture into the seas of Thuvathur find their bodies blackened. Hence, fishing is prohibited. In the present, Kingston aka King (GV Prakash Kumar) smuggles sea cucumbers for his boss Thomas (Sabumon Abdusamad). He does not believe in local superstitions and denies the death of his father Charles at sea.
The story has many characters and subplots—his girlfriend Rose (Divyabharathi), grandfather Martin (Elango Kumaravel), friend Godson (Rajesh Balachandran), and the avenging ghost of Solomon (Chetan). The film’s screenplay is so fast that it fails to create an emotional connect.
If it had focused only on Solomon and Bose’s conflict, it could have been a good horror mystery. “Kingston” loses its sheen because of its music, exaggeration and muddled narrative.
